My story with this family starts with this guy…

Josh and I have known each other since we were 3. Our families went to the same church…every single Sunday…and because we were so close in age (he’s 3 months and 1 day older than me), we became good friends. And by good friends, I mean I picked on him, made him cry, he annoyed me to no end, and somewhere in high school, we became actual friends.

In high school, Josh met Cassie.

Cassie is gorgeous, sweet, funny and just about anything else you could want in a person. Josh and Cassie fell in love…a wonderful kind of love where their primary concern is the other’s happiness.

Sidenote: I was recently looking through old files on my hard drive and I found a conversation I had saved between Josh and me on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) in 2003.

brokfreak (me): I am really glad you’re happy. Cassie’s cool…if she hurts you, I’ll have to hurt her, but she’s really cool
lonerpoet (Josh): Thanks, she is. I don’t get lucky often and I screw up more times than I can think of, but for the first time in like forever, I’m happy.

I’m super excited I never had to hurt her because the more I get to know Cassie, the more I love her! Six years ago Josh and Cassie had this beautiful girl, Kaelynn.

A family that is as happy and in love as this is definitely special.

And I was lucky enough to document their joy and excitement while they waited for their newest member to arrive.

Josh, Cassie and Kaelynn, I love you all! I’m looking forward to many more photoshoots in the future!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love spending time with family and remembering everything that happened throughout the year. I love taking a moment to really think about all of the things I’m thankful for. This morning I woke up and thought about how thankful I am for him:

You know what he did for me recently? I had a really rough 3 weeks. Well, I’ve really had a rough couple months since I started teaching. But about a month ago I got the flu. It was really bad for a week, then got a little better for a week, and came back full force for the 3rd week. I was still teaching the entire 3 weeks because getting a substitute is more work than just being there. It was really hard on me. I felt horrible and I was exhausted and yes, my students completely took advantage of my weakness. After a trip to the doctor, I finally started to feel better and thankfully, it’s gone away now.

Well, Rudy decided that because I was having a horrible time (and complaining about how cold my classroom was) that he’d get me a present.

I have yet to go a morning without using it.

I’m incredibly thankful for the year I’ve had. It has been stressful and challenging, in so many ways, but this is a year that I know I’ll look back on and appreciate, in all its challenging goodness. Happy Thanksgiving!

Bosley was the winner of my free pet session and boy was I excited! I mean, I would have been excited to photograph any of the entrants…but Boston Terriers are incredibly expressive, which makes for fun photos! Bosley was so easy to photograph and I had a lot of fun spending time with him, his buddies and his mom, Whitney.

Here is what Whitney said about Bosley when she entered him into the contest:

1) Bosley is my everything – I pulled him out of the shelter two and a half years ago when he was about three years old, and weighed just six pounds. I thought he probaby had an untreated parasite and that after some treatment, he would put on weight and could be adopted out.  Not so.  After a year and a half of battling, testing, consultations, specialists, and recommendations for euthanasia, he was finally diagnosed with Celiac’s Disease.  Somewhere during that year and a half I fell in love, and today, his condition has been under control and “managed” for almost a year.  He’s a whopping 14 pounds and my BABY! :)

2) Bosley sings!  He makes the cutest (in my opinion), oddest, most interesting sounds, and he’ll do it on command – sort of.  You have to start singing and he will join in!

3) Bosley saved Buster’s life.  Buster was abandoned at a local vet hospital and was rescued by Selma Animal Pack.  Then he came to me.  He was 11 pounds and dying – much worse than Bosley initially, even though I didn’t think that was even possible.  He needed (and received) a blood transfusion immediately, but because we had already been through the ringer with Bosley, we started him on the same treatment from the beginning.  It had been guess-and-check with Bosley for the first 18 months.  It was a long road with Buster as well, but after about 6 months, he was 28 pounds (much larger than Bosley) with a shiny coat, and adopted by a vet student at Davis who actually just graduated this past May.

I couldn’t help but get a few photos of Bosley’s buddies, too!

Darin and Brenda (and a confession)

November 12th, 2011

I’m completely struggling right now.

Struggling to be a good teacher, struggling to be a good photographer and struggling to be a good wife and friend. It’s really hard to admit that. I so want to be good at everything I’m passionate about and everything I love but all of these things take a lot of time. Since starting my teaching journey, I haven’t learned how to balance everything. But I have learned that I need family, friends, teaching and photography in my life to be happy. Each time consuming piece is so much of who I am that I don’t function well when one or two of the pieces are being neglected.

I’m working on finding that balance.

I really have to say thank you to my clients, friends and family who have been so patient with me! It’s not easy for me to disappoint people or myself, really. But, I’m working and trying and I WILL get to a point where everything flows happily together. :)

With that said, I have photos to share! Finally! Woohoo! As mentioned in their sneak peek a couple months ago, Darin and Brenda celebrated their 2nd wedding anniversary in September! These two are just…perfect together. So adorable, so loving, so kind and so happy. They are the kind of people that you feel lucky to know and even more lucky to call friends. They have both unintentionally taught me so much about being a good and kind person. I really am, very fortunate to know them. :)

Darin and Brenda, my wonderful, patient friends…thank you so much for being such gorgeous models. I love these photos and sincerely hope you do too!

Have I mentioned that I spent 8 years in college getting my BA, Credential and MA? Teaching is another passion of mine and today, I was offered a teaching position! My life is about to change drastically, but I couldn’t be more excited.

I’m still pursuing my other passion (photography, of course!) though! I couldn’t live without it!

And on that note…I am finally going to share Chris and Jenny’s session! Chris and Jenny are some of my really good friends who were kind enough to let me take some photos of them so I could experiment. I’m so fortunate to have gorgeous friends who model for me when I want to play a bit. They just so happen to be engaged and getting married next month, too! Can’t wait to celebrate with them!

Aren’t they the cutest?

I had a different post planned today but then I received some sad news…my grandma (Mema) passed away this afternoon. It’s hard to write a post like this because I don’t really know what I can say that’ll express how I’m feeling. So instead of trying, I want to write this to help myself remember the grandma I knew and loved.

The Mema I remember loved yard sales and good deals. She was generous and loved to give presents. She crocheted pot holders and quilted. She loved to play the guitar and had this great soprano voice. She had a signature disapproving look, that I think has been passed down throughout the family. She made the best homemade biscuits I’ve ever had (and gave me the best breakfast memories with both my grandparents). She also made smelly gross food, like fried okra. She never thought things should be thrown away. She was incredibly sentimental. She was blunt. She had a goofy side. She liked to get approval on new outfits she put together. She always had a perm. She always remembered birthdays. She loved to socialize. Friends and family were incredibly important to her. She loved pictures. I never had to wash a dish with her around. She only had one way to fold a towel and I still fold them that way to this day. She loved God and her church. At one point she was taller than me and liked to rub it in my face…until she wasn’t taller than me anymore (because she got shorter, not because I grew). She was a great mom…the kind that gave and gave, even when she didn’t have anything to give.

And one of my favorite pictures of us together (with a point and shoot camera) on Christmas in 2008…as well as one not too long ago.
